I discovered recently that some forms of Linux will display the battery level of a UPS connected via USB in the same way it would show battery life on a laptop, making it easy to see right from the desktop.

You forgot to mention that this can also protect you against voltage spikes. But the power supplie already has a fuse and the primary and secondary sides are isolated each other so its almost impossible to damage parts like cpu gpu mobo ram…

  14. USNVA on December 9, 2019 at 7:11 pm

UPS devices are stupid! Make one of these with a full size 12 volt AGM battery and give it a man’s 1,000 watt PSW inverter. People Beware: If you still decide to purchase a UPS for your electronics, DO NOT use any power inverter other than a pure sine wave. In other words DO NOT use modified wave!

    Great for a bios flash

so if my pc uses a maximum of 470w, i have a 650w psu, how many va should i get?

  17. Barut Tech on December 9, 2019 at 7:14 pm

No w in dc circuits is v×a but in ac va is v×a and watt is va×power factor

  18. Chris Howarth on December 9, 2019 at 7:15 pm

A UPS is like a fire extinguisher; you really want to have one on hand, but you hope it never becomes necessary.

  23. Gaming Stream on December 9, 2019 at 7:19 pm

No one speaks about how much time the battery lasts for UPSs .. its like rocket science knowledge …. ? Hello ???? what is the Amp hours for the batteries usually ??? Dislike for talking too much none needed info .. you need to start the Video by explaining 3 variables ONLY [VA , watts and AH] then keep going from there ….

  24. Antoine Nieto on December 9, 2019 at 7:20 pm

i was waiting how to calculate my UPS needs, what´s wrong with u guys?

  25. John on December 9, 2019 at 7:21 pm

A UPS’s voltage regulator will allow you to use old school or inexpensive generators. I used to work at a company that made UPS for mainframes and entire buildings. Best investment to protect electronics. Only big downside is the batteries need to be replaced every 2 to 4 years depending on the unit.

I know about the data saving, but what about damage to the parts? electricity here goes out a lot, will getting shutdown and spiked ruin my pc?

  34. Patricio Pantheleon on December 9, 2019 at 7:30 pm

Investing on a good UPS for your expensive PC set is the right choice to have it protected well. However, a UPS suddenly beeps and you don’t what to do this write up http://bowlofthoughts.com/uninterruptible-power-supply/ might just help you so give it a visit and see how you could manage it yourself.

NERF gun? Perhaps a 12 gauge!

  37. RandoCrypto on December 9, 2019 at 7:33 pm

But… instead of spending big money for a commercial grade unit, could you just make a chain of UPS’s? Plug like 5 or them into each other. When the power goes out, the first UPS will be used first as the other 4 will still be getting power from each other. When the first one dies, the second one will detect the power is out and it will be used etc until all 5 are dead. It’s genius!

  42. Max TheWinCat on December 9, 2019 at 7:38 pm

You should mention difference between active and passive UPS

  43. kirbythebamf on December 9, 2019 at 7:38 pm

Just used a "killawatt" meter on each device at a time to calculate before i buy a UPS. Now i’ve got to decode how UPS wattage works

  44. Nauman Ashraf on December 9, 2019 at 7:39 pm

What if I want a ups for 1 hour minimum of back up supply for my pc?

  45. Laughing Man on December 9, 2019 at 7:41 pm

"As quick as possible" yet wastes time on unfunny jokes

  46. Obi Okeke on December 9, 2019 at 7:42 pm

So if my computer will realistically use about 450 watts but i use a 650 power supply, should I calculate for that? I ask because when I add all the max (number stated on labels) wattage for the electronics sharing a power-strip/desk it’s about 1300 watts. and that would mean I’d need a Pure Sine UPS with at least 2000VA which doesn’t look too common/affordable online. A lot of them go for over $1000, fml.

My only problem with my place is that I don’t notice the power goes out until my low battery comes on on my laptop (I like my house dark lol)

  50. Desi Car Guy PK on December 9, 2019 at 7:48 pm

Thats why i recommend a laptop
Under 1 hour of gaming or 4 hour of normal use if it has a 50 watt hour battery
