Video Game Rating Systems – A Better Approach to Content Ratings – Extra Credits

Games are becoming more common than ever, but the time-consuming and expensive methods to rate them for mature content haven’t grown along with them. Allowing developers to submit their own games which are then subject to consumer review for accuracy would make it possible even for small games to get content ratings, however platforms such as Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and even the App Store would need to encourage developers to use the system.

    Wow, this never crossed my mind. No wonder its hard for some parents to figure out what mobile games are good for their kids.

  10. achan1058 on April 26, 2021 at 12:22 am

    Huh, I thought:
    E = Rated for kids, played by adults
    M = Rated for adults, played by kids
    So, gaming companies would rather overrate their game than underrate anyways, as a T~M rating would appeal more to the kids and teenagers than an E rating would.

    What are rating pending and kids to aldult means?

  15. Freaky Fetish on April 26, 2021 at 12:25 am

    An interesting proposal. But how about we do this instead since any rating system is Rife for abuse corruption bigotry bias excetera regardless of whether it’s in video games movies TV or other media. How about we just all grow up stop being prudes and throw out the outdated idea of rating systems entirely. And put the burden of what kids watch play excetera where it should be on the parents. How about we just tell the parents to take responsibility for what your kids are watching or playing instead of forcing artists to limit their speech the suit your needs and your desires. Rating systems are completely useless anyway since 80% of game shops and whatnot don’t give a crap about who they’re selling these games too it’s the same with movies the majority of places don’t care about the ratings anymore largely because they are so easily corrupted for personal ends. For example a movie that has a short sex scene in it might get an R rating. However other similar movies that are no more violent gory or sexual than the first one have been rated NC-17 because the sex thing happened to be a homosexual one. That is straight-up bigotry and that is not the only example. If we just threw out the goddamn rating system and just grew the fuck up. We wouldn’t have these types of problems and we could get a wider variety of better games Movies TV shows books Etc. If you’re really so worried about your kids seeing anything objectionable then do your research on the item before letting them play it or buying it for them Google is a thing and it is very easily used for this exact purpose. Look up summaries or reviews of the game movie show excetera in question. It’s not that difficult. We as a society need to stop limiting art for the comfort of parents when they need to take responsibility for their own damn kids. If you personally find anything in the game objectionable that’s your problem not the game developers.

  19. L. Pietrobon on April 26, 2021 at 12:34 am

    Unpopular opinion: The ESRB should be used to compare the game’s rating to your own or your child’s maturity. Not as the only thing to base your purchase.

  20. Sir History on April 26, 2021 at 12:35 am

    The major problem is that the theory doesn’t account for Human error via the rating system for example somebody at ESRB could consider a game with Mature even though it obviously isn’t but it will still get suspended because of that person’s bias (even if you try to eliminate bias people non the less will still have it thanks to sub-conscious bias) Also User abuse is still a major as if enough people start to flag it most likely the person might think they where over-looking the game for some reason-(going back to human error)

    Honestly parents who allowed kids to play mature games, are mostly the ones who doesn’t care if their child go out to smoke, drink, have sex, and the likes. I can clearly understand why teen pregnancy, younger kids smoking and children knowing about swear words are so high.

  36. Alex Potts on April 26, 2021 at 12:52 am

    I miss the general optimism of this channel, in contrast to most of the commentary around the video game business which is all about critiquing the status quo rather than suggesting how things could be better.

    I’ve watched too many videos on video game industry topics whose entire content could be boiled down to "big developers are greedy" – while this is true, I don’t think the insight is original, interesting or useful by itself. Until you identify the misaligned incentives that cause the problems, and how to rectify those incentives, you’re not really helping anyone pointing out a problem that everyone is already aware of.

    (If I were being *extremely* cynical, I might even go so far as to suggest that these commentators are incentivised to keep the problems in place, so they can churn out another dozen videos rehashing the thesis that lootboxes are bad. I don’t think this is the intention, these people believe passionately in exposing some very real problems, but they seem more interested in condemnation than constructive criticism, because condemnation is easy and feels good, while constructive criticism is hard work and requires engaging with people you don’t like.)

    It’s annoying how people rate games higher than they should be especially games like prison architect it’s should be a teen but it’s mature.

    ESRB ratings for Dummies

    EC = Very Safe
    E = Safe
    E 10+= Safe, but some moments may require parental supervision.
    T = Parental supervision is advised.
    M = Parental supervision is STRONGLY advised.
