This one had the best look IMO,  The red buttons & arrows added a little more fun and flare to the genesis controller rather then the later 2nd and 3rd designs which are nothing but a blob of boring black. Also, the 3rd design had a horrible d-pad….it was squishier, sloppy and more mobile, rather than the clickier, stiffer more tacticle feel of the d-pad of the first 2 designs.

Have you ever noticed some 3 button controllers have longer cables than others?  I always wondered what was up with that.  Did they make the cords longer at some point in time?

The reason they made short cords (apart from the cutting manufacturing costs) was because the Japanese traditionally play games very close to their tv sets.

The Sega Genesis mini comes with USB versions of this controller model.

What country are you from? You keep saying Zed which is in a language other than English. So far Google only led me to French. Though you don’t sound French to me.

Some of the 3 button pads have better dpads than others. Mine is tight and tires my thumb, but some are looser and feel as good as the 6 button dpad. Imo.

I can’t even remember that I ever saw one with the red color. There are non at Ebay, at least none that could be launch controllers. Well mine aren’t the red ones, they are black. Only difference are the start button the Japanese one has a grey button the chinese has a red button for start.

I also hate this cable sleeve support on the Genesis Controler, the NES didn’t had one and even the PS2 didn’t had one not the N64 not the SNES (That are all controlers I have right now) but the Genesis Controller. Why? So the Cable will breake more easily? It also makes it harder to pack them because you need to be more serious about not fold it directly on the cable sleeve support. You would may gues it would prevent from doing it, and I never heared about controller getting damaged that often. But the majority of electricions agree that the cable sleeve support does not prevent from breaking the cable, but make it happen faster.

Old video I know, but does anybody actually know where to get these? I’ve only ever found the grey/white buttons rather than the red ones.

    Yup I have that

  19. ArcadeGames on May 12, 2021 at 1:40 am

I have a few three button Sega Genesis controllers which do not have the red letters. Some of the controllers say "made in Japan" and some of them say "made in China". The one made in Japan is very glossy and the ones made in China are more of a matte finish. Do you know which is the original, I would think Japan?

Thanks Satoshi, great review. I apparently have one of these and did not know it was a launch controller. Was always wondering the difference between the red and grey buttons.
