Soldering Sunpower Maxeon Solar Cells

I show you how to solder Sunpower’s Maxeon solar cells. These cells are very flexible, attractive, and supposedly efficient. All the solder points are on the back of the cell, which makes the connections very easy. The price per watt of these cells is higher than some. The time saved is HUGE! That alone, might be worth the purchase price. There is no need to solder tabs on the front of the cells. I am not a paid spokesperson, but I gladly would be.

    I think it would have to be cut from the 3 + terminals towards the 3 – ones. leaving the middle connectors half and half on each pair.

    So if i want to use the current from these, I just connect my appliance to the middle two to get electricity?

    I prefer oldschool wire cells. I don’t like this connectors. But interesting cells.
    Anyone know cells like this, but for wire?

    Hi Mike. I saw another video that the guy is saying that the solar cells are defective after him made a solder job. Do you had any issue like short circuit because of too much solder?

    Do we know if its possible to cut the cells in half yet ? I need to fit some on a sailplane wing. 8 full cells fit on the wing, but towards the wing tips only two halves would fit.

    To somebody who has handled these cells, (I haven’t) — are they flexible like rubber, or like really really thin glass? Are they flexible like the plastic film ones, or are these just really thin so less likely to break? Thanks!

    Awesome. I am preparing to make a small PV lab, and decided to go with Sunpower Maxeon cells, because of the metal back, that makes them less fragile, and ease of soldering, fill factor and ageing characteristic. Any idea where I can trusted distributor in Europe for these cells, that don’t lie about grade / bin, and are packaged well for shipping? I need about 10 cells for start. Because the system is really a prototype, and for testing DC/DC converters, I would like to find the best possible grade and reasonably matched cells. I want Gen III, preferably Me1 or Le1, due to their superior temperature coefficient. The ones on alibaba, or some shops, are very shady, and data they provide don’t match Sunpower official datasheets.

    Amazing. Have you thought of packaging the cells in 60W bundles, with forward diodes, tabbing wire and roisyn pen and junction box (we’ll assume all enthusiasts worth his salt has a soldering kit), and sell the thing well-packaged with worldwide shipping? I mean you already made the instructional videos, why not get an export business going too.

    I am bit confused by Maxeon cell models. What is difference between C60 and Gen II/III ? They look super similar, but use different binning scheme, and I am not sure what C60 is exactly.

    How are these cells for handling? I know some solar cells are semi-flexible, and others are incredibly brittle and fragile.

    Is it possible/available to just use a single strip of extra wide solar tabbing instead of the dogbones?

    The dogbones are much more expensive than a roll of tabbing.

    *Doesn’t pay to install solar or foam insulation unless you know you’ll be in the house for at least 20 years ( **tinyurl.com/y3gpstue** ). Even without purchasing these items, in a normal housing market (not SF,NYC), it takes 5 years to break even due to when you sell, you need to pay realtor fees, moving fee, fees on the loan, etc. so if you can’t be in the house for 5 years,*

    This was a good DIY tutorial . I am wanting to fabricate a solar Bimini top for my sailboat. Using 120 cells firmly adhered to Sunbrella® canvas —–Can you recommend a supplier for the cells? Prices on eBay are all over the map? Thanks again!

    Hi Mike can you advise where we can buy these cells for DIY as a search of ebay is producing results but they all look untrustworthy and a close inspection of the pictures shows they are slightly different on the back to the cells you used

    What kind of flux and solder wire are you using. Also what temperature do you use to keep solder wire in liquid form before you put the tab down?

    Where did you buy these? Maxeon only seem to sell boxes of thousands of cells, and I’m not sure if the ebay sellers are legitimate.

    Can these cells be cut parallel with the lines, meaning the back still has the 1 full pad, 1/2 a pad in the middle and then the last full pad ?
