Kids in Brazil still playing Duke Nukem 3D to this day probably…lol
They get no console love over there! Visited brother down there and many, MANY kids still have Snes/Sega or strictly android gaming

I never bought into any of Sega’s marketing as a kid… no matter from which angle I looked at Sega games, something is always off and they look like shit in one way or another… I never owned any sega consoles, until the day I bought a Dreamcast and figured out you can actually run ISOs on them… Best console ever…

Herzog Zwei was one of my favorites.

Some helpful info for anyone wondering: Rendering 3D polygons in those days was strictly CPU-driven, this was before dedicated hardware accelerators. The Motorola 68k CPU in the Genesis, which clocks at 7.67 MHz, is what handles all the arithmetic and rendering for the geometry, the VDP chip only handles 2D. It’s speed, along with having 32-bit registers internally and being connected to a 16-bit bus, means it has the overhead to achieve this without the need for special chips in the cartridges. It doesn’t always make for playable games but it’s an impressive technical feat of the hardware. 🙂

    *Vectorman 1 & 2
    *Jurassic Park: The Lost World
    *Virtue Racing
    *Ecco: The Tides of Time
    *Sonic 3D Blast
(This might be underrated or Unpopular opinion but I remember being Mindblown from playing Sonic 3D blast back in the mid-90s.)

  17. Mr. N on April 11, 2021 at 12:14 am

It’s inconceivable not to include Dynamite Headdy and Sonic CD onto this list!

  18. natewebs on April 11, 2021 at 12:14 am

The Genesis was an amazing piece of hardware.

  19. Roberto Felippe Santiago on April 11, 2021 at 12:14 am

*Zero Tolerance* simply is the best fps even made to Genesis. I still hope someone gonna finish the second one, *Beyond Zero Tolerance* , that’s unfortunatelly until now just a Beta.

  20. Mmhmmm Yea right on April 11, 2021 at 12:18 am

I love the Richard Nixon winning pose from Vectorman

  21. Ed y on April 11, 2021 at 12:18 am

You should have included the more recent Wolfenstein 3D port for the Genesis. Its almost a 1;1 from the pc version and far better then the Snes port.

  23. Didi Meow & the MEWS on April 11, 2021 at 12:20 am

the best part of Zero Tolerance was if you had two copies you could link up a second Genesis and have a two tv LAN party blew my mind at the time i didn’t know the genesis could do that

  28. Absolynth on April 11, 2021 at 12:24 am

Vectorman. Truly an underrated classic. Though not without it’s cult following no doubt, myself counted among them.

  29. AustynSN on April 11, 2021 at 12:24 am

A quick google search shows I’m not the first to notice this, but…. HOLY CRAP WALL-E STOLE FROM VECTORMAN BIG TIME.
(But then, it’s Disney. What would we expect?)

I miss the feeling of actually having the money to purchase a new game, informing myself of what was good in a few magazines, travelling to the store in antecipation, taking it from the shelf where so many colorful others were, smelling the scent of new plastic and paper, bringing it home in a physical jewel case while reading the manual, physically plug the cartridge into the console and play the game forever.

I was obsessed with Zero Tolerance back then. I remember being so excited to beat it because it was such a long game with limited lives. Always wanted to see a sequel or a remake of it. It deserves some sort of attention.

  34. EpicPanda on April 11, 2021 at 12:31 am

    Surprised Ballz isn’t on this

  35. Daniel T. on April 11, 2021 at 12:32 am

  47. ArktikVixen & MadWolf on April 11, 2021 at 12:44 am

Try Lost World: Jurassic Park and Ballz if you want some more tech impressive stuff for Genesis (Even Jurassic Park 1 was cool as you could play the Raptor).

As for DN3D on Sega MD better than DNF? Boo, bad joke. DNF isn’t that bad but merely came out at the wrong time. If it was released in 2007-2009 with the original Prey it probably would’ve blown peoples’ minds. Still, keep in mind that DN3D came out 3 years after the original Doom and a year after Descent yet Duke just feels like a Doom-clone. Full 3D Quake was released only 5 months later so Duke3D was never honestly groundbreaking. And ugh, the bullet sponge enemies were even on PC, if it takes more than 10 bullets to kill the standard bad guys you really gotta re-code some HP stuff or hitscan accuracy…

Five frames per second isn’t pushing the limit. It’s actually breaking the limit.

  49. popculturehero on April 11, 2021 at 12:46 am

Viewpoint, and Cool spot goes to hollywood, did some really impressive pre rendered 3d stuff as well. Quite a few isometric perspective games now that I think about it.
