RETRO TECH: SEGA GENESIS

In 1988, Sega took Nintendo by storm and released the Sega Genesis. The conflict between the two companies created a video game console war for the ages. I learn about the cultural impact the Genesis had from comedian Hannibal Burress and play Mortal Combat for the first time against Mari Takahashi from Smosh Games. Fellow YouTube creator Jake Baldino from Gameranx teams up with me to test some questionable Sega Genesis gaming accessories.

The number one thing that I felt made the Genesis stand out over the SNES was the music. Something about the Genesis made the music better to me. I remember when companies would release the same game on both systems , and the Genesis versions music would always sound better. I wish I knew the technicalities behind that. But that was the most important decision for why I asked my parents to get me this over the SNES

Oh my god this brought soooo many childhood memories 😍😍 I was the only one among my close friends who had it. We would play hours and hours until someone (usually my mom) makes us stop!

Mari says she got into the Sega because she saw Asian characters… is it wrong that I’ve never really cared whether or not I saw people who looked like me in movies and TV? I used to watch Good Times or What’s Happening as much as I watched Happy Days, and connected to the characters in each even though no one looked like me (well, except for Arnold). That continued through the 80s, 90s, and so on.

Seems like I must be missing something because it’s so often a formative moment for others.

This video pretends Mortal Kombat and other violent games were exclusive to Sega lol.

  21. darkhalf81 on April 21, 2021 at 12:36 am

The SEGA Genesis to me was such a game changer, and I owe my introduction to it to my best bud who was a gaming addict like me until now. I played a lot of awesome and non-Kids’ friendly games which was a breakthrough back in the 90’s! MK, Splatterhouse, Vectorman and Earthworm Jim to name a few.. I miss those days.. Life was so great being a kid, no need for non-sense drama. Just kick your gaming buddies’ ass was an achievement in itself!

  25. Lewis J. on April 21, 2021 at 12:41 am

21:00 don’t forget that in 1999 Sega was trying to forget the SEGA SATURN which came out on the Japanese and American market around a few months before Playstation One. Most people didn’t really have faith in the ‘3DO’ or the ‘Jaguar 64’ so needless to say nintendo kept their edge during this period untill… Sony happened… and then Microsoft happened, which was headed by ‘J’ Allard at the time, if I remember correctly. Oh yeah* and… THAT’s what made Sega begin to become forgotten 🙂

You dont blow it aka spit thats the worst way to clean it but the magical best way was to use a matchbox its cardboard to clean the cartridge.. you rip a square peace and clean the leads back and forth
