Opening rhino hunt from Howard Hawks' "Hatari!"

Starring John Wayne and Red Buttons, with a fantastic score by Henry Mancini, this pre-credit sequence features a very real but now almost extinct African rhino. If they want to remake it, they’ll need CGI.

Only thing wrong with using a real wild rhino is that you can tell it’s not the same one each shot, that is if you look at the horns

God, I love this movie. John Wayne playing the hardass as usual, sweeping views of the East African savanna, Henry Mancini’s unforgettable score…it’s a synergistic combo.

Luckily this chasings do not happen nowadays, when rhynos are up to extinction. But good actors indeed.

Even as a small kid in another country far from the US, I was shocked and appalled at the brutal treatment of animals in this movie. I HATED this hunting of animals. Imagine if human beings were hunted by another species like this!!! I also hated the Bwana white colonial masters mentality and huge monumental sexism that John Wayne embodied. What a crude, sexist, animal hating macho asshole of a man! Thank god I live in the modern times when such behavior can be crushed by the heel of a woman’s foot. Yessss!!!!! I’d like to hunt the John Wayne’s of this world with a lasso and drag them to the ground, scared shitless then sold to a prison camp called a Zoo. Fucking assholes!!!

This movie is hilarious, the way they constantly wind up the animals

You know what this movie had that’s sadly missing these days? Down time. Time for your characters to just chill and be people, growing a connection between the audience and the character.

Only some of the crew rates goggles. That rino was gonna tear that guy a new corn chute.

Been cool if one of those Cowboys jumped on board for a rino rodeo.

That looks to be about a 49 or 50 Chevrolet. Mine is a 51. 216 stove bolt six. Dip and splash oiler
Still going strong at 70 years old.

To this day one of my all time favorite movies. As a kid in the sixties I used to sit on the hood of our station wagon with a cane pole and a loop at the end pretending I was John Wayne.

A great John Wayne Howard Hawks collaboration and with a great Mancini score one of the best movies ever.

A very underrated John Wayne film. Not mentioned very often on lists of his greats.
Filming was exquisite and real, and was one of those “feel good” flicks you could watch over and over.

  36. Torsten Prausewetter on May 7, 2021 at 1:20 am

  37. sclogse1 on May 7, 2021 at 1:21 am

The whole music track is on side two of the album. Jean Luc Godard admired the film for it’s attitude toward plot.

Enjoy it while you can kiddos. Cancel Culture will come for this eventually.

  43. sfenodonte on May 7, 2021 at 1:31 am

Exactly, the plot today would be so maybe without cigarette smoke and catch of monkeys then you add a battle against the poachers and … nothing perfect.
Wanting you could also do the film with the children and grandchildren of the characters of John Weine and Martinelli … even if such a temporal difference is not usual in the film script (it would be the first time, usually the maximum is 20- 30 years here almost 60 years)

Maybe a producer reads here and …………….
