Mario Bros (Atari 2600) Gameplay

This is some gameplay footage of Mario Bros on the Atari 2600.

Even though I’m not very good at this game, this is actually a pretty good, playable port. I am from the NES generation of gaming, so I missed the Atari age of gaming, so I can only look back in retrospect, and with an open mind.

If I had a VCS at the time, this game would have been awesome to have. Sure, it pales in comparison to the arcade original, but thinking back to how it would have been at the time, having a playable version of Mario Bros at home would have rocked.

By Atari standards, it’s an alright port.

I remember this in the arcades. Its a highly collectable cart for the 2600. It was Mario before the Nintendo console came out.

When I was a young girl, my family bought me this game for Christmas and I hated it and the reason I hated it was because being called "Mario Bros", I thought I had to jump on the creatures; in other words I was playing it like the Nintendo version, but that kept backfiring, but I finally bumped the board under a turtle and then tried walking over to it, and that scored me 800 points and then I liked it

This port of Mario Bros is actually much harder than the Arcade. The fireballs are faster and can’t be punched out, which sucks as they keep getting faster with each level. You can’t stand on the POW switch. Worst of all, the pests only stay one floor each. Nothing worst then getting to the stage where the pests are at the fastest speed and your trapped on the floor with an enraged Sidestepper. However, the Slipice only try to freeze the lowest unfrozen floor. They take longer to freeze the floor and you can kick them while they’re melting into the floor before it freezes. Unfortunately, the floors stay frozen longer than they do in the arcade. No dropping icicles or invisible floors on higher levels. Overall, it’s still a very fun game. This was one of the last games put out on the 2600. 😉

Wow pretty amazing this series is kinda still going such humble but fun beginnings.
I played it on 7800 a vast improvement graphically etc, looks better than super on nes just simpler gameplay.

This 2600 port is so creepy looking that it feels like it came out of a creepypasta story.

This is the worst Mario game in the world is this even Mario???🤔🤔

  30. Kyle Hinish on March 8, 2021 at 11:04 pm

This game gets a bad rap, but it’s honestly really good for Atari 2600 standards.

  31. Richard Garcia on March 8, 2021 at 11:04 pm

I got bored of all Mario games, including Super Mario Bros World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. The only game I still like that at least has Mario, is Yoshi’s Island. Beautiful background designs, the music in levels such as cave levels, Yoshi transformations, the bosses, the bad guys, sky levels, snow levels, cave levels, monkey levels, forest levels, maze levels, stone levels, rolling rocks, falling stones, giant eggs, castle levels, haunted levels, invincible Mario, bonus courses, hidden levels, Poochie, stair formations, blue breakable spikes, ice cubes, fire-breathing, freeze and shattering bad guys, fast moving platforms, P-switches different than on Super Mario Bros World, sand domes, even in the air, crushable columns, bonus games, bonus competitions…

  32. EngaPheniks on March 8, 2021 at 11:04 pm

this might probably be the first ever Mario

  33. Louie Clarke on March 8, 2021 at 11:05 pm

    Not bad…..

    For a 2600 game.

The first multiplayer videogame I played with my brother , where is Luigi by the way?

  35. Björn Werther on March 8, 2021 at 11:07 pm

So my first videogame ever on my first console ever!

  36. Rollergoalie16 on March 8, 2021 at 11:07 pm

Atari managed to code a "round" fireball and coins on the bonus stage, but could only manage a square "coin" during gameplay?

  37. Richard Rodriguez on March 8, 2021 at 11:08 pm

I chuckle at the moving coins really being spinning bricks because of the 2600’s graphics and memory limitations, but this is still a fun port of the original arcade game.

I don’t understand people that say “this game is trash” judging from its graphics.

  43. LightBlue2222 on March 8, 2021 at 11:14 pm

I think it’s cool if I get this itl work with a Genesis controller. That’s like Atari Nintendo and Sega all powered together.

  44. Brandon Gonzalez on March 8, 2021 at 11:18 pm

The original version by Nintendo is MUCH better. The colors are more vibrant, the sound is better. Compare this one to the Nintendo one.

  45. Googlar on March 8, 2021 at 11:18 pm

They’ve been including remakes of this game as a mini game for at least one game on most of the systems they’ve ever released. IIRC, there’s even a version of this in Super Mario Odyssey.

There was even a full-on sequel which was a more elaborate version of this, released for the infamous Virtual Boy, called "Mario Clash".
