Keyboard Phones In 2020: The QWERTY Compromise

Keyboard phones. Over the past two decades they’ve gone from new necessity, to laughable leftover … and all the way back around to nostalgic novelty. Hard as it may be to believe, in the year 2020, you can still buy keyboard phones … and in this roundup I’m taking a look at all four that I’ve been able to find. Join me for an extended hands-on with the Unihertz Titan, F(x)tec Pro1, Cosmo Communicator – and a loving send-off to the BlackBerry KEY2!

  7. John cooper on April 9, 2021 at 11:50 pm

Just wondering if any of these devices support “Talk Back” for visually impaired users? Being totally blind a physical keyboard interests me, and possibly other blind users?

  8. Uli Schmidt on April 9, 2021 at 11:50 pm

4:33 that reminds me of keyboard smartphones from back when not every non apple smartphone was an android

  10. Shelcod on April 9, 2021 at 11:55 pm

You all laugh, but having physical keyboards would make modern smartphones a heck of a lot more practical. It would be great to be able to do web design on a smartphone.

  13. Doug Steel on April 9, 2021 at 11:56 pm

One thing is, most on-screen keyboards take up so much estate they’re useless in landscape

  14. Roshan on April 9, 2021 at 11:56 pm

Back in 2011/2012 I really wanted some iPhone 4 case that had a slideout keyboard.

  15. Nate Holden on April 9, 2021 at 11:56 pm

I prefer a physical keybaord over the on screen ones.
I think that they are cool and I personally really like them.

  16. Jeffrey on April 9, 2021 at 11:57 pm

4:30 woah that was trippy i looked at the time on that phone and thought it might be close to that time right now and when I looked at the clock it was the EXACT same time

  17. shaoronmd on April 9, 2021 at 11:57 pm

I got into qwerty phones too late. I only ever owned one and when I had to replace it, qwerty was out. I still prefer to typing with it than this virtual keyboard as the feedback helps a lot.

  18. Theoretical Exercise on April 9, 2021 at 11:57 pm

I want a keyboard so fucking bad. But not a blackberry lol i want a sliding keyboard like the first galaxy s

  19. Melvin Alexander on April 9, 2021 at 11:58 pm

I am looking for a SMALL phone with a physical keyboard. My iphone SE (original) is dying and I will not go any bigger. I don’t want a smartphone anymore. I just want a phone and texting machine that is small. I am going to carry an ipad mini in my bag for app things. Any suggestions? I am struggling.

  33. L4nc34l0t on April 10, 2021 at 12:21 am

I really loved the Blackberry Priv when it was around.
At first glance a regular full size all screen android phone… until you gave the lower end a slight shove up which moved the screen upwards and revealed a full grown Blackberry keyboard just like on the Key 2. A perfect mix between regular android and physical keyboard phone.

  34. daniel carter on April 10, 2021 at 12:22 am

This needs to be perfected for modern phones because back in 2008 and up untill 2011 thats all id look for keyboard was a necessity and i hated switching to touch screen because the keyboards were awful still, little better now, but id go for a nice slide keyboard phone, first full touch screen phone was, htc evo 3d, loved that phone even though looking at it now it was not.. great. But what a gimmick

  37. F1RST CLASS on April 10, 2021 at 12:24 am

I love my Samsung Moment with Google featuring both an awesome QWERTY Slider and TRACKPAD 🔳 I love these two features together. Some automakers are using TRACKPADS 🔳🔳 on steering wheels.

Lowkey miss keyboards on phones .z

  39. Joseph Andreanus Wijaya on April 10, 2021 at 12:27 am

I was very intrigued with that FxTec Pro1! The keyboard and screen slider reminds me of Nokia N97 and E7, which I really loved back then. But after I saw the price and the specs they offered, it became a big NO. I still hope they would make a sequel of that phone, though

  40. shepherdgroup. biz on April 10, 2021 at 12:28 am

Looking forward to the BlackBerry Key 3. The physical keyboards provide accuracy and speed when combined with the predictive. Mediocre and opinionated review. Will not be subscribing….

  41. Jaym Akyu on April 10, 2021 at 12:29 am

Can never go back to anything else after swipe style typing. Went from a slow 2 finger typer to a fast 1 finger swiper.

  42. Some Person on April 10, 2021 at 12:33 am

The Cosmo Communicator reminds me of the Nokia… Communicator.

  43. Katherine Robertson on April 10, 2021 at 12:36 am

I wish there were more form factors like the Nokia E7’s.

  44. the oofman on April 10, 2021 at 12:38 am

The BlackBerry classics toolbar was riped off with the titan.

  45. zUltra on April 10, 2021 at 12:38 am

8:51 *battery percentage literally goes up*

  46. Digital Moonlight on April 10, 2021 at 12:39 am

Cosmo communicator looks like the dream device for Ubuntu Touch or the Open source Maemo versions. Too bad they couldn’t work with those projects to make a full fat linux palmtop with cellular capabilities.

  47. Ryan Fish on April 10, 2021 at 12:41 am

    I miss a physical keyboard.

  48. Cuddle Muffin on April 10, 2021 at 12:41 am

my dad can drive and type on a Blackberry full qwerty keyboard without looking at the phone, and without making any mistakes (as in driving/ writting errors)
