I Was Wrong About The PlayStation Controller This Whole Time?

Sony started a big debate on Twitter the other day when they said the bottom button the controller is formally known as the Cross button and not the ‘X’ button. This started a whole conversation around the controller and what everyone would call the different buttons and while the majority of people seem to say X, Sony has made it clear it is the Cross button.

    X, Cross, Plus, Phillips; whatever…

  2. Orl Cal on December 4, 2019 at 3:59 am

From now on I will start referring to it as ‘Christ died for our sins’. Nah not really, it’s X.

  3. KONATAonPC - on December 4, 2019 at 4:03 am

Is this news? Who didn’t know this already? If the other buttons are SQUARE, TRIANGLE, CIRCLE, why would it be X? Literally realised this when I was 5 years old, well done guys.

  4. Thomas Ruth on December 4, 2019 at 4:03 am

None of games that I’ve played on PlayStation console, where they say the name of the button, call it "Cross Button", they call it the "X Button".

  5. MadFinnTech on December 4, 2019 at 4:04 am

Well, yes, technically it’s cross but everybody has called it "X" since forever. Not gonna change now.

  6. Yoru Hana on December 4, 2019 at 4:06 am

There are only A B X and Y no symbols on a normal controller.

  7. ⸄y⸅⸄o⸅⸄u⸅⸄r⸅ ⸄t⸅⸄e⸅⸄x⸅⸄t⸅ ⸄h⸅⸄e⸅⸄r⸅⸄e⸅ • on December 4, 2019 at 4:09 am

    X = Cross
    □ = Box
    o = Wheel
    ∆ = Pizza

  8. Dex Labs Tech on December 4, 2019 at 4:12 am

you got em were it hurts my man

  9. Teonyi on December 4, 2019 at 4:12 am

Ok, now we know it’s cross, but we will really call it cross now?… no, we won’t.

  10. AudioAndroid on December 4, 2019 at 4:12 am

So does this mean I have a Cross Box 1 ?

  11. SexyMoans on December 4, 2019 at 4:14 am

I will always call it X if money hungry sony wanted us to call it cross they would have placed the button on the controller to look lika a cross, so shut up tight-assed sony.

  12. Psycho Sullivan on December 4, 2019 at 4:15 am

Holy Shit!!!! What have I DONE, WHAT HAVE I DOOOOOONE

  13. Brenn K on December 4, 2019 at 4:15 am

The forty-five degree angle plus button….also known as the multiplication symbol!

  14. SaintZombie1 on December 4, 2019 at 4:15 am

    Cross, Disk, Pyramid, and Box.

  15. stuna210 on December 4, 2019 at 4:17 am

It’s because in Japan there is no character or kanji for x, but for the word cross, yes there is.

  16. TheRenalicious on December 4, 2019 at 4:18 am

Watching a speedrun of FF7, and the entire parade section in Junon displays "(X): Cross" dozens of times. So there we go 🙂

  17. Nctrnl Mjsty on December 4, 2019 at 4:20 am

I’ve known it’s a Cross, because I owned a ps1 at launch, a ps2 at launch, a PS3 at launch, and own PS4 and do not own an Xboner. With that being said, Smash the X (ex) button

  18. Freddie Johnson on December 4, 2019 at 4:21 am

I always thought it was Cross as they are all shapes not letters and no one I knew growing up in the UK called it anything else.

  19. Nuclear Sandwich on December 4, 2019 at 4:22 am

If they wanted us to call it the cross button then they should have turned it 45 more degrees.  Of course we would probably be calling it the plus button after all these years.  😛

  20. Kodama S. on December 4, 2019 at 4:25 am

I’m late for this discussion but many french people, myself included, call it "croix" which means "cross".
Now the real question is: are we supposed to call the circle button "cercle"? because me and my friends have been calling it "rond". Rond, croix, carré, triangle!! It sounds way better.

  21. Elrick King on December 4, 2019 at 4:25 am

Their problem is the sound "X" from Xbox thats why all this extremelly stupid topic I know that Sony created the System but you can’t tell me that a square is a circle…thats just dumb, the PlayStation was a CD add-on for the super Nintendo and the snes controller had an X and PlayStation is a copy/paste from the snes controller…. You see? Is simple.

  22. DY4Y on December 4, 2019 at 4:26 am

As far as I’m concerned they’re all letters
    Ex, Mem, Delta, Ou

    X, ם, Δ, O

  23. Eduardo Weidman Barijan on December 4, 2019 at 4:27 am

Well Sony will be alarmed to know we brazillians call the buttons: Triângulo, Bolinha, Xis, Quadrado. (Triangle, Ball, X, Square)

  24. SonnieSlim1 on December 4, 2019 at 4:27 am

A cross is like a crucifix. Its an X and idc what sony or any ps guy says.

  25. Cloud Strife on December 4, 2019 at 4:28 am

It’s a Japanese console. Don’t people understand that they use that figure to depict cross or a cross between two or more things? Also they are geometric figures. A square, triangle, circle and cross. Why would you put the letter X in with a bunch of shapes? People who are calling it an X are doing so 1. Because of the position it sits. 2. Because they don’t understand Japanese culture and 3. They only see things for what they want to see them for and not their possibilities. Not trying to make assumptions, but that symbol couldn’t possibly be anything but an X, correct? And Sony is just the publisher of Spyro. Spyro was originally owned by Universal Pictures (via the defunct Universal Interactive) and created by Insomniac Games. So it wasn’t someone at Sony that made the error of making one of the characters call it an X, it was someone at Insomniac Games.

  26. pxc on December 4, 2019 at 4:28 am

    uh it’s called ‘times’ ×

  27. Charlie Nax on December 4, 2019 at 4:28 am

the X was a cross because it was meant to mean decline or no, whereas the O button means confirmation or yes, and it makes sense… in japan, where the O is confirmation and X is cancel, they changed it when the ps1 was released to the west and ps games here uses the X for confirmation so… even they dont respect their own set rules soooo…

it doesnt matter, just call it whatever you want

  28. Diverdjent on December 4, 2019 at 4:29 am

Uncharted 4, Elena showing Nathan how to play Crash Bandicoot, she says press X to jump. 😀

  29. Calvin Felix on December 4, 2019 at 4:30 am

X is a letter. Cross is a shape. Just like a square, a triangle and a circle.

  30. qlum on December 4, 2019 at 4:30 am

Wait people call it X. Sure it may be easier to say but really it makes 0 sense to call it that. when the other buttons are geometric shapes.

  31. Mike With An L on December 4, 2019 at 4:32 am

Always called it “X” Then after watching this video, was playing Harry Potter on PS1 with my daughter, and the characters tell you to push the “cross” button. Feels wrong

  32. A W on December 4, 2019 at 4:33 am

    yeh no it’s X, they’re wrong

The "equal distance" argument falls flat when you look at such as the St Andrew’s Cross

  33. UsernameU222 on December 4, 2019 at 4:34 am

I’m more interested why, with all the other big news Sony could have delivered, they chose to put to rest what they refer to a button on their controller as.

  34. Gerald Bull on December 4, 2019 at 4:35 am

4×4, 2×4, Moto-x… how many more examples to you need of the “x” being used to reference to the word cross? People get more inept by the second…

  35. TBBS 2000 on December 4, 2019 at 4:36 am

A X is a cross, look it up, end of story

  36. bistro autismo on December 4, 2019 at 4:39 am

I will call the right button circle and O

  37. skyviolet on December 4, 2019 at 4:40 am

Actually, if you really knew better, yes the Japanese don’t consider it a letter. But what you fail to mention is the actual Japanese joystick is reversed (just like Nintendo) So like many visual selections for yes and no, the circle is yes, and the X is no… The American version is reversed (because we read from left to right, where Japanese read from right to left) but they consider us backwards because we use the X for yes and the circle for no… That’s why….

  38. Y0uT008 and P3d0ph1l35 on December 4, 2019 at 4:41 am

For years I called all the buttons by SNES format

  39. UniqueShadow on December 4, 2019 at 4:42 am

If it isnt an x button then why would Bentley from sly cooper tell me to press "x"

  40. The Blue Thunder Bunny on December 4, 2019 at 4:43 am

I remember when I first started getting on PS4 with my cousin, he would call the square button box. It was really weird.

  41. Nick C on December 4, 2019 at 4:43 am

  42. Shmeebs on December 4, 2019 at 4:44 am

In the west (at least here in America), our go-to reference for the shape of a cross is the Christian cross. Those don’t form a square, the bottom bit is longer, and they aren’t diagonal. Also, we have phrases like, "X (ex) marks the spot." That is a cultural oversight on Sony’s part.

  43. Ben Huang on December 4, 2019 at 4:45 am

Always preferred the Crossbox One Cross, anyway.

  44. Toni Corvera on December 4, 2019 at 4:47 am

I’ve heard it being called cross in media and YouTube videos since forever, where have you all been??

  45. cold cuts on December 4, 2019 at 4:47 am

dont be fooled, its the x button

  46. Elrick King on December 4, 2019 at 4:48 am

No is not a cross this is a cross + this is an ex "x" the cross is the directional pad, now thats a cross.

  47. Y0uT008 and P3d0ph1l35 on December 4, 2019 at 4:49 am

Triforce, Red Ring of Death, Shadowban, Y (cause SNES)

  48. Kyle L on December 4, 2019 at 4:52 am

    Sony and nobody: It’s "cross".

    Xmen: What?
DMX: You ever heard me say "Cross gonna give it to ya"?
Microsoft: We have Gears 5 on Crossbox!
    Deadpool: Nice job Crossforce.
    Jesus: That’s an "X". This is a f***ing cross: †

  49. Maeldun on December 4, 2019 at 4:53 am

Everyone has known this for decades, media is just retarded and then everyone has to jump on the bandwagon and spread stupid shit with them, gotta get trending =/

  50. Grayson Wayne on December 4, 2019 at 4:55 am

Maybe we should all learn Japanese and speaking their language since their interpretation and culture for some reason outweighs what people have been doing and saying for over 20 years.

    Konichiwa desu ne sugoi kawaii.
