How to Properly Choose & Use a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)

#powersupply

In this video I explain how to choose an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to protect your computer and other electronically sensitive devices from damage due to storms or neighbors who like to play with circuit breakers. I go over what to plug into and what to avoid plugging into an UPS. Additionally I use a web calculator that is designed to assist people in choosing the correct UPS based on the equipment’s power requirement.

Question I own an APC Back-UPS Pro 1100 (BP1100). I just replaced the battery but after assembling the unit back I turned it on, the green LED turns on first blinks 36 times the goes off, at the same time I get a solid amber LED, beeping 4 times (5 times with a 30 secs interval). What can I do???

I got myself a cheap low-capacity UPS just to protect my main PC; I like to leave it on overnight processing the day’s work. We occasionally get very short power cuts (less than 10 seconds) but still enough to corrupt the system or crash the hard disk! I’ve set the monitor software up so that if power isn’t restored within 60 seconds, the computer will shut itself down safely.
I’ve heard that running the UPS all the way out, even when testing how long it lasts, is VERY bad for the battery and can significantly shorten its life though…

No! My coffee maker must be protected. My coffee cannot be interrupted by a brownout under and circumstances!

i had unpacked an intex ups 600va that was stored and this goes back to highschool days but i want to use it right now even though its not that much but still it will help me save work during an interruption or surge. but as i plug it in its not lighting up i know i will have to charge this for a long time before starting to use due to long storage and to sort of awaken the battery inside the ups right? but how should i know that this one is charging ior just dead and plugged as there is no lights as i plug it in. (theres no pc and monitor connected to it yet) 3 lgihts are backup, normal and standby and theres a power button. iudid not click anything.. should i power it on right after plugging to the socket to see what lights will i have or just plug and leave it plugged for about 12-24 hours before trying to turbn on? even though im not sure if its charging or dead already? because its old but im pretty sure it was working before it was stored years and years ago. Also one more thing i checked the fuse its intact but its kinda grayish inside like theres a metal sand inside./.. but its not blown up or something… cause i have 3 things in mind,,,, If its not broken dead, then it must be the fuse??? (not sure how to check fuse but this one is old but not blown up) or just need to plug and leave to re awaken the battery life… hey!!! i said alot of things here sorry … hoping for some rescue out there guys all over the world… spread that knowledge you have there buddy 😉 Godbless thankls in advanced

APC is not good UPS. Most of the problem is their battery it won’t last. Specially if you use for CCTV for 24hrs use the battery will over charge. Way back 1997 Maxwell UPS is good brand. I don’t know if they are still today. I am looking on that brand but nothing. Nowhere to be found

For how long the ups 1000 would last powering up a : laptop, two monitors, and a router??

  16. Clark Henderson on April 27, 2021 at 12:44 am

A UPS and battery back-up are not the same. A true UPS supplies power continuously, the battery backup units you described ONLY supply power when power fails. The difference can be major depending on the application. In most home applications a back-ups does a good job, if the application is critical a UPS is preferred. This is an excellent video for selecting a backups.

Dan, can you recommend any UPS which can power a setup with 400-500W power draw and make NO noise while the power is on?
    Thanks!

Got three of the same one at 1500va but I use them in a different way, and not how they are intended, Cheap ebay solar panels with a cheap battery controller charging the 12volt lead acid batteries and use the inverter to power my ps4 and monitor.. I can play all night no need to plug it in to the mains 😎😉 you can hack these also, I love electronics ❤

Thanks for the video. This might be an older video however, it’s still educational and informative. Looking around for 220-230V UPS and it isn’t common, Can you provide any link. The reason is that i want to sent it to overseas where they use 220-230V. Any ideas?
