How do antidepressants work? – Neil R. Jeyasingam

Dig into the discovery of antidepressant drugs, how they work, and what we still don’t know about depression.

In the 1950s, the discovery of two new drugs sparked what would become a multi-billion dollar market for antidepressants. Neither drug was intended to treat depression at all— many doctors and scientists believed psychotherapy was the only approach to treatment. Neil R. Jeyasingam details the decades-long journey that followed and how it revolutionized our understanding of depression.

The amount of relief I had when I heard the word chemical imbalance. All this time I had been blaming myself. Listening to people saying it’s my fault that I am weak or that I don’t try to be happy. Or that it’s cause intentionally be sad to grab attention. It’s been suffocating me. But the idea that all along it might have not been entirely my fault. That all my attempts and trying to be better to act happier or just suppress my depression wasn’t for nothing. I am real. My depression is real. And it’s treatable. I feel better.

Successful people don’t become that way overnight. What most people see at a glance-wealth, a great career, purpose is the result of hard work and hustle over time. I pray that anyone reading this will be successful in life.

My friend is diagnosed with clinical depression but she’s not taking any meds because she doesn’t have the money for it due to quarantine. She didn’t want to ask her parents for the money. I offered her help but she refused. What should I do here?

i really wish the chemical imbalance theory hadn’t become this big.

been depressed since 11, tried a million antidepressants, none’s benefits – if any existed – outweighed the side effects. side effects that always just further complicated the process of getting better.

I remembered when I was about to get a prescription for taking up antidepressants and my mom goes hysterical about it because she fears this psychedelic effects, and some sort of irrational fear that I might go insane or will worsen me and instead just says: "You don’t have enough spirituality on you" or like "God is not present enough in your life" or like "You’re just adding up more financial burden for me" and some other hurtful ridiculing things she’ll say and often I don’t speak about it. I’m in an Asian household and have been dealing with depression and anxiety that I have been battling for a very long time. I tried asking for help about my mental health and usually the result in the end is just that I’m being a clown to them anyway so, yeah. Thank you for reading.

Something I hate about antidepressants is it’s sometimes treated as a "quick fix". But it’s not a long term solution.

Funny how the test for depression still is: Are you depressed?
Not being insensitive but just coming from experience from friends and classmates that the protocol to get these drugs is to merely claim yourself as depressed. Depression is real but stigma would be dismissed if it was more scientifically diagnosed.
(Also I’m a biomedical science major so I understand brain chemical imbalances is a credible argument just wish it was more rigorously diagnosed)

As someone who was put on Prozac/fluoxetine at a young age when it wasn’t needed, I very strongly feel the need to point out that being forced to take it is what originally caused me to start having suicidal thoughts.

Every hospital I’ve been to doesn’t really give a damn about the kids and will force me to take it even though I’ve told them why I stopped. If I don’t willingly take it they’ll hold down and inject it onto me.
