Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Genesis) Playthrough – NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Sega’s 1989 arcade port for the Sega Genesis, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts.

Played on the professional difficulty level, both loops and the best ending are shown.

The sequel to Ghosts ‘n Goblins is a big step up – it looks and sounds great and is much, much easier than it’s predecessor. The Genesis port is quite good – not as good as the Supergrafx port, mind you, but the game is here completely intact, and looks and sounds damn good for a 1989 game.

I’m serious about the difficulty. It’s hard to believe this game actually sits between Ghouls ‘n Ghosts and Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts in the series for how comparatively not difficult it is. I wouldn’t call it easy, but I never swore at it once, and I seem to remember way back I beat it in under a week (unlike SGnG, which as a kid took me years). The second round is even easier. Getting the magic shooting weapon at the beginning really allows you to fly through the game virtually unopposed.

Epic music. I used to live this game as a kid. Getting to Loki and kicking his butt was always a great joy.

When it’s took you 20 years to watch this to realise how to beat the game to realise you have to beat the game again

  7. TheEatmorDininghall on December 4, 2020 at 9:45 pm

The SNES version was the superior version. Better graphics and sound, with the exception of the slowdowns.

Nice game port from arcade, SEGA……. but your sound is like a MODEM dialing. LoFI quality

I think the SNES version is much harder although I do like the gameplay mechanics of this version better.

Eu AMO esse jogo. Em 1990 eu auxiliava numa locadora de vídeo games e na época eu jogava muito mas só consegui finalizar no modo fácil. Esse jogo é fantástico em tudo.

Definitely the best launch game for the system, and one of the more enduring platformers of the time. Too bad Capcom pretty much abandoned the Genesis for SNES later on; they had an incredible start on Genesis.

The fact this game actually came out on the Genesis in the 1980’s is amazing in itself. There was nothing this close to an arcade port at the time. I still love the Sega Genesis.

Very Nice. Just like my run, but without game over appearing every 30 seconds

I remember being like 6 playing this and never being able to beat that eyeball thing. I didn’t know looking tips up was a thing until way later

  37. The True Bro on December 4, 2020 at 10:23 pm

Weird, I first tried the SNES "version" of this, and it infuriated me to no end because of its slowmo and overall frustrating gameplay.

Years later I could try the Genesis version, thinking it would be even worse (because of my rage for the after mentioned version and my bias towards Sega back then)… and when I realized it, I was already in the last level and had a helluva time playing it. Still tough as nails but definitely more playable and fair, and that made it better in my eyes. And weird thing is, I realized you could shoot upward and downward merely by accident at the worm like boss.

My favorite weapon is the axe <3 followed by the sword.

Quick question: during the second playthrough, can the goddess appear in any chest in any stage as long as you have the golden armor?

  38. Darren Gislason on December 4, 2020 at 10:24 pm

Game: Congrats, you beat all the levels.
    Player: Phew, that was tough.
Game: Now do it all over again.
    Player:…

  46. Deyja Moors on December 4, 2020 at 10:36 pm

I’m blown away that you made it through the whole game in the time you did and with no damage. Damn! I never was able to beat it till I was an adult. Even playing it for fun, it can still take me some time to beat the whole game.

  47. KaijuForceNeo on December 4, 2020 at 10:38 pm

Ah yes! I downloaded a Rom of this on my Nintendo Wii back in 2010. It was pure fun in spite of its difficulty.

  50. Gaming Music Jukebox on December 4, 2020 at 10:40 pm

Fun fact is that SEGA had to reprogram the game to release it on their platform because CAPCOM had an exclusivity deal with Nintendo, which didn’t allow third parties to release games on other platforms.
