Firefox F-7 – Electronic VFD Tabletop Game 1983 (Grandstand)

“Firefox F7” (aka “Astro Thunder”, “Epoch Astro Thunder 7”, “Epoch Galaga X6”, and “Radio Shack Astro Thunder”) is a tabletop electronic released by Grandstand in 1983!

I managed to pick this up recently and here I take a look at the box, the unit itself, instructions and attempt to get some gameplay footage beating all 6 stages! (If anyone has any filming suggestions to get better results please feel free to leave a comment!)

I believe this is one of the last of the VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_fluorescent_display) games rather than LED.

And it’s frickin’ awesome! Probably the best electronic game I’ve ever played!

Enjoy!

    Yep – universal adaptors work.

Loved playing with both that, and ‘My First Computer’ as a young child.

great game. You should also mention that you can only destroy an enemy ship when they are aligned between the 2 purple markers just above the halfway point of the screen 🙂

I remember getting this game for Xmas back in 83, at the time it blew my 9yr old mind how great it was with the fantastic ‘graphics’ and awesome sounds.

I’m sure I’ve actually still got it somewhere in the loft along with a munchman and fogger, grandstand did some fantastic games back then didn’t they☺

I got one of these for Christmas and I remember being totally disappointed how easy it was to finish. My dad took it back to Woolworths and came back with a Phillips videopac.

5 years later and still no one knows what 4th generation means in vfd games? Seriously, I’ve been Googling it and can’t find anything.

Funny, I just paid 30 quid for one on ebay myself.
Needs some repair though, most of the controls make the game reset or just dont register at all

I still have mine from back in the early 80s, only problem is the joystick on the left is working properly, pity because I loved that game so much…….

Here in the US it was Tandy’s Astro-Thunder, unless they released it as Firefox somewhere here as well.

Van Halen M/! Favourite band together with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. I used to have the Firefox F7 when I was very small in the 80’s. My Dad bought it back in 1984 or so and I remember that he played it much more than I did. It must have been very state of the art for its time back then.
