Composite Cables Vs S-Video Cables For PS1 Games – Affro's Curiosities

Hello folks! Welcome to a brand new season!! Affro’s Curiosities is back and hopefully it’s better than ever!

In today’s video I wanted to go over a better cable choice when it comes to retro games: S-Video!

It’s not the absolute best cable and of course there’s many variables that can influence video output quality but, S-Video is in my opinion the best cable to start with for gaming on older systems!

On a real PS1 then, I played a few games to see how they fared with composite and S-Video cables!

Hope you enjoy this video!

I notice with some games it’s a small improvement (like some not blurred backgrounds), while it’s blur city in others if you use composite (like in Tomb Raider 2). As you know though, I use HDMI with my PS3. This vid is superb as always from you 🤗🙌❤

S-video is a nice happy medium for old games as it’s not too sharp and not too soft. However the dithering is usually a deal breaker for me and I feel you are not seeing what the artist intended. If someone doesn’t mind it, that’s perfectly fine as well. Composite on a CRT with a good comb filter can provide pretty good results.

Is the difference just as big on lcd screen TV ?Or does the quality difference is mostly noticeable on a crt tv?

I have a japnese ps1 with rca…no svideo cable and a lcd TV. I have no crt TV, upscaling or whatever. I am then curious.

Here is the second episode of the new season! I hope you found the video and the results interesting!

S-Video is definitely a decent cable to get started on retro systems!

The upscaling is very good on the games. Definitely prefer S-Video over Composite any day. Good job as always.
