    I have been trying to figure this very thing out and I am glad I accidentally discovered this. Very good communicator. I have a 100W Coleman kit from Costco and a battery from Costco. I think the charge controller is 8 amps and is flimsy and I will buy based on your links. Thanks.

    A good idea would be to install a fuse or dc breaker on the positive cable from the battery to solar to protect the cable and regulator. Another good idea would be an isolator to kill the voltage from the cables going to the battery incase you need to remove the battery.

    Can your solar panels charge more than one system, at a time? Or consecutively?

    With one set of panels I was thinking, just for example, I would have 1 set of batteries for, perhaps, 12v lights. And another system for a 110v ac fridge— only!!! (The fridge being important I don’t want to ever have a problem with its power supply, so a separate system with plenty of dedicated battery so it never gets interrupted, defrosted, etc!!!
    So, can one set of panels be used to power two different battery banks? If so, how would that be accomplished?

    And is it possible to always supply the fridge system first? For it to have precedence over charging anything else? To make sure the fridge batteries are as full as possible before other systems are resupplied. If so, how or what is used to accomplish this task?

    Thank you Will, for the basic explanation of a Solar system. It is most excellent that you explained the connections and which to connect before the others. It makes sense that connecting the Solar panel to the Controller before the battery is connected will damage the controller.

    Anyone out there want to weigh-in on my question here? I have been a commercial/industrial electrician since 1977. Four years in the Navy before that, along with their excellent in-classroom electrical schools.

    My question is this – I am building a small system out here in the California desert using two used solar panels and a Renogy 30A Rover charge controller. We work on a lot of yachts in Long Beach as well as electric Duffy boats. Therefore, we come across a lot of used 6-volt batteries. I want to pair up the batteries and only use the two best-matched ones at a time for playing with the solar system.

    It may turn out that these panels aren’t much good. I have already put my meter on the output terminals and find 20-some volts, so my research says they are 12 volt panels. I also counted the cells on the panel to confirm voltage.

    My first system will be DC only, no inverter. We work on a lot of boats, from tiny, up to the 100-foot Italian yacht we spent a lot of time on. Therefore, I am planning some 12volt lighting and fans and pumps and all sorts of toys, just for learning. None of this will be critical, so used batteries and no inverter should do just fine.

    If I am swapping battery banks now and then, how do I make sure panels are not connected during the changeover? I don’t want to mess with the wiring by putting extra stress on the Renogy connection terminals. I am thinking of putting a 2-pole industrial-rated "light switch" on my panel outputs to kill the panel feeds when I am playing with batteries. Is this just overkill? Should I simply cover the panels or maybe do the changeover when the sun has gone down?

    I also intend to expand the system eventually and/or build more of them out here for the neighbors. This one is my "free" test system/teaching system. I figure to suck these old golf-cart batteries until they have no life left, and then we can use them for our core replacement when we are buying other, new batteries for boat owners.

    Will reminds me of a lot of my classmates in Navy IC "A" school. We were young and very enthusiastic about the education we were receiving. They always reminded us how much our schooling was costing the US taxpayer and that in the end it was the equivalent of a two-year Associate degree in electrical engineering.

    Thanks for the help. And, let’s pool our $$$ and buy Will some real electrician’s tools! Using a ‘tweaker’ screw driver to tighten the charge controller screws??? Using a crescent wrench or pliers on nuts and bolts? Both are big-time no-no’s in the construction industry.
