Beginners Guide to Using a Battery Backup UPS System

If you are in an area that has frequent power blackouts, brownouts, and spikes in your electricity, it’s essential to have a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to protect your sensitive electronics. This video explains in a simple way how a battery backup system (UPS) can shut down your computer gracefully in the event of a power failure.

If you’re going to power a pellet stove with this, make sure the stove doesn’t use an induction motor for the exhaust fan, or that the UPS outputs an actual sine-wave and not a setp-sine waveform! Induction motors cannot run on step-sine waveform! Unfortunately those kind of stoves almost always use induction motors and this type of UPS does output step-sine waveform (I got he same).

So if everything ran well with no problems, I would be very surprised. (I hope it did though!)

Thank you very much for your video, i’m having a problem with my unit APC XS 1500 that looks very similar to yours, the problem is that in an outage the remaining batterie time got to 0 and I suppose it discharged all the batteries, I cannot turn it on after the outage and I suppose is because is totally discharged, what should I do? I’m keeping it plugged to the wall but after 2 hours I still cannot turn the unit on, I would very much appreciate your opinion in this and thank you very much for your kind attention.

I like the older uuints that cannot be hacked from internet or any-other source of input , info to you is also info to others when hacked ! i have never ran internet connection on any back up due to that very reason ! Older units also have a transformer and are better than the switching system used in newer units = smarter units are not always better or safer for long term use ! Just my findings , good video friend !

I guess we can’t plug power bars into the battery sockets of the APC huh?

  26. camelCased on December 5, 2020 at 10:16 pm

Although many UPSes have enough juice to power devices from batteries for long time, still many of UPSes have internal timer to limit their work to 5 – 10 (or more) minutes because converting the power from the low voltage batteries to 110/220V can heat up the power transistors inside. So, you usually cannot use a cheap, mainstream UPS to power your electronics for longer periods of time.

Interesting display, but there are more than just 2 battery outlets, it is the entire left row, the top two on left and the grey ones on the right use a power command feature so that when the pc, which should be getting its power from the master plug, is no longer drawing current above a programmed setting, the other grey plugs turn off. But the are 4 battery outlets and 4 surge only outlets.

  48. Giovanni Maglente on December 5, 2020 at 10:39 pm

Which is the best practice for the UPS after the connected computer is shut down?

    1) Turn off the UPS but let the UPS still plugged to main outlet (keep charging the battery)

    2) Turn off the UPS and also disconnect it from main outlet (the battery would discharge slowly in this state)

    3) Let the UPS keep turned on.

  49. GodlessManitoban on December 5, 2020 at 10:42 pm

Great video, I was debating on whether to install PowerChute or not. I’m still not convinced but I’m mostly concerned as to why I have only 15-20 minutes left if the battery was to take over. I do have a few things plugged in and I just bought it about 10 hours ago. So is it not fully charged even though the indicator on screen says it is? I have the BX1300G.

Are there any solar systems that recharge UPS’s like this?
