Atari 5200 (1982) Library | Trying all 69 Games

I came across a video showing all the A52 games in one video, just a couple seconds each. I didn’t think that was good enough to demonstrate the console’s library. I then said to myself; “what if someone made a narrated video about ALL the games?”

I really like these videos but can I offer a suggestion? I feel you should have maybe five or ten seconds of gameplay after your commentary on each game, so we can hear the music, sound FX etc, especially when you mention something interesting about the music or sound!
Regardless, thanks for the videos, good stuff!

This was my first system! I remember my controllers holding up okay, but I was an only child so maybe it didn’t get enough play to really push them. My favorite games were River Raid and Space Dungeon. Guess I should have held onto it, but I was only a kid and it was way before the internet. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

When the original controllers went bad, I was able to find a controller that looked like the 2600 controller and it would connect through the original controllers. I enjoyed the 5200. Only had 12 games.

Barely an improvement over the 2600. No point to releasing this, should’ve skipped to the 7800.

Fun fact. Zaxxon is actually you fighting space bases on asteroids

Rescue on Fractalus!: t’s not ‘fake 3D’ it is ‘fractal graphics’. But you do great reviews.

  14. TheBandy01 on April 12, 2021 at 12:08 am

You realize you are getting old when you remember playing these games when they were first released.

  15. HEMIpoweredherochao on April 12, 2021 at 12:10 am

You should get ATARI vault on Steam. It just recently released 5200 DLC so maybe . . . . . .?!

  16. Travis McDowell on April 12, 2021 at 12:10 am

I was interested in getting a 5200 but that is terrible and your opinions are expensive if you want a better controller. But your right the game line up is pretty good. I recommend if someone wants to get something similar get a Colecovision the game line up pretty good and you could switch out with a Genesis controller if you want

  17. John Taylor on April 12, 2021 at 12:11 am

If they come out with a flashback version of 5200 i would get it.

  18. Doctor Valentine on April 12, 2021 at 12:12 am

Space Dungeon was the main reason to buy a 5200.

  19. PlasmaPower on April 12, 2021 at 12:13 am

This is a misunderstood console. It had good games, but the terrible controller prevented anyone from realizing this.

  20. Brian O'Connell on April 12, 2021 at 12:14 am

The interesting thing about Rescue on Fractalus (I know one of the key developers), is that it did something no other console ever did at the time: The topography was all generated at random. Hence part of the name, "fractal".

  24. Keith Kemper on April 12, 2021 at 12:16 am

And why did he have to explain pacman?

  25. Orange Harrison on April 12, 2021 at 12:16 am

Wow Choplifter has stunning animation for the time.

  26. Amphitheater public on April 12, 2021 at 12:19 am

Space dungeon requires two controllers. The game came with a plastic adaptor so you xan control the firing and movement.

  27. Adam Krause on April 12, 2021 at 12:19 am

BallBlazer was so advanced for its time. I played it a lot!

What do you mean by fake 3d? It’s not polygonal based but the game still provides a 3d environment for you to move about in.

    30:41 uhh what

  30. Cathryn Mataga on April 12, 2021 at 12:22 am

The controller is what killed it. PacMan would have been the killer app/game for 5200, but the controller just made it bad. First major stumble for Atari, and they never really recovered from this.

  31. Travis Taylor on April 12, 2021 at 12:23 am

The 5200 library I enjoy more than the 7800. The 7800 I can only play when the audio is muted. The 5200 is basically an Atari 400 computer

  32. Rebel Usa on April 12, 2021 at 12:23 am

Stone age compare to modern video game.

  33. John McHugh on April 12, 2021 at 12:27 am

24:32 Space Dungeon is listed under "R"?

  34. Pixels & Creatures on April 12, 2021 at 12:27 am

The 5200 was my first console. I found a lot of games cheap… Because the system was already dead when I got it, lol.. Back then I wasn’t use to that being something to look out for

  35. Garland Rice on April 12, 2021 at 12:28 am

I got the 5200 for Christmas. It came with Pac Man. Right away I noticed a problem with the controller. The wonky design made my hands tired and painful after playing for a while. Controls was slow to respond often. And I also developed a callous on my middle finger. It hurt so bad. My hands would get sweaty from playing Pac Man and my palms hurt. I gave up on it and put it away.

  36. Pikgears on April 12, 2021 at 12:29 am

I had the atari 400 version of Astrochase. I liked the intro cinematic but couldn’t figure out how to play the game properly

  37. Canuckster1169 on April 12, 2021 at 12:30 am

This narrator sounds like the video game version of the garage 54 narrator

Space dungeon starts with the letter R now

13:54 what the actual derp, a mario game? was this licensed by nintendo? why did they allow that?

  41. Patrick Goodspeed on April 12, 2021 at 12:38 am

I owned one for a few years, the 3 games I had where underwhelming (pacman, space invaders and donkey Kong.) I absolutely hated the controller, floating joystick and mushy buttons, had told it in a less than comfortable way to use. The console was the largest I’ve seen until the ps5 came out. Loved the look of it though, sleek black wedge, reminiscent of Bang&Olufsen equipment of the day.

18:26 I thought p0rn games for the Atari only existed on the 2600

  45. Ryan McCumber on April 12, 2021 at 12:41 am

crazy how inferior the 5200 was to the NES when it was supposed to be a competitor. You can’t deny the charm of some of those games though

  46. PS4sos21 on April 12, 2021 at 12:41 am

I’m thumbing this up because you said Hero was excellent. It was my fave 2600 game along with Frostbite which I bought on the XBox 360 arcade.

  47. Keith Kemper on April 12, 2021 at 12:41 am

I disagree with robotron the framrate was horrible on it

  48. Eric Johnson on April 12, 2021 at 12:43 am
