A Defense of the N64 Controller | Nintendrew

The Nintendo 64 gamepad is one of the most controversial and contentious controllers of all time… but is it really THAT bad? In this video, I’ll explain why I think the N64 controller is one of the best designs Nintendo has ever produced. Thanks for watching!

Games like mortal Kombat trilogy and WWF no mercy used the dpad so I played the n64 with my hands on the 2 outermost positions most of the time.

he thinks the virtual boy controller is bad? he should see the atari 5200 controller

  3. Magnus Nilsson on December 24, 2019 at 9:48 pm

Reach all the buttons? no problemo.
My left hand thumb reaches the stick just fine, and the Z-button can be reached by both/any middle finger.
That middle grab always ends up tickling my bellybutton.

  4. YetiAnimations on December 24, 2019 at 9:48 pm

The N64 game pad is my absolute favorite controller ever😁👌

  6. every things retros on December 24, 2019 at 9:49 pm

i like the n64 conntroller and the 64 screw people that say games are bad of age 2019

  7. philthestampede on December 24, 2019 at 9:50 pm

But which classic designed new controller is the best. I’ve tried a few and they always seem to fuck up the joystick sensitivity. Like instead of being able to walk and job, you can only sprint, for example. Are there any controller that do this properly? The captain by hyperkin? Any of them?

  8. Jack Lazzaro on December 24, 2019 at 9:51 pm

5:15 Uh… that’s not a DualAnalog controller. That’s a PSone controller. The DualAnalog is darker in coloration, has longer handles, and has plastic, concave thumb pads on the sticks. And, oh yeah, it says "PSone" under the PS logo in the center of the controller which you are holding.

  9. Titanium Labs on December 24, 2019 at 9:52 pm

You’re right! It did influence the joycons. Both controllers have garbage joysticks

  10. Flavio Thepianist on December 24, 2019 at 9:56 pm

I never had a problem with this controller and I grew up playing the N64.

  11. mazzb305 on December 24, 2019 at 9:56 pm

Funny I never heard any of this N64 controller slander back when the console originally released.

  12. Stephen LAMMERS on December 24, 2019 at 9:57 pm

Yeah… I’ve been holding it wrong and I finished super Mario 64 somehow.

  13. Anthony Frank on December 24, 2019 at 10:00 pm

I love the controller. Especially that pressing up on the stick is intact aligned with your thumb as opposed to new controllers.

  14. Jordan Thach on December 24, 2019 at 10:01 pm

well I love where the start button is well september 23 is my birthday and i’m getting a n64 and over all the controller looks good acept where the Joy stick is

  15. cgwworldministries on December 24, 2019 at 10:01 pm

Sorry i can’t look at the virtual boy, it blinded me when i was younger. So many headaches were had playing wario and telereoboxer.

Did anyone see the toed in the background

  17. Scott H on December 24, 2019 at 10:03 pm

1:17 it’s more expensive but more accurate, especially over time, but their implementation of the sensors was crap

Edit: it’s the deadzone accuracy that can’t be replicated by analog sticks, but nobody’s come up with a robust stick design that can use optical sensors. For walking in SM64 or HESSing in OOT, the original is necessary

  18. joesph caulkins on December 24, 2019 at 10:04 pm

Honestly i never hated the n64 controler i really never saw what was wrong with it

  19. J. St. on December 24, 2019 at 10:06 pm

The original controller is the best way to play the system. Controllers like the Brawler64 are OK, but are incompatible with shooter controls.
In my experience, the people hating on the n64 controller fall into one or more of the following groups.

    A. Bad at video games, blames the hardware
    B. Never played shooters using D-pad for movement.
    C. Never greased a joystick
    D. Unwilling to accommodate or appreciate technological limitations
    E. Never used the accessory port
    F. Shops at GameStop and/or plays FIFA

  20. TetraBitGaming on December 24, 2019 at 10:07 pm

Hecc yeah brother! Honestly such an underrated, if not the most underrated controller! I was actually considering making a video just like this for a while, but I’m glad to see it was made by more capable hands 👏👏👏

  21. SuperWeegee64 on December 24, 2019 at 10:08 pm

Recently just got an n64 (and a controller) and realized that when in "3D mode" you can somewhat reach the d-pad by stretching your thumb and shifting the position of your grip yet still able to get hold of the stick. Wonder if any game developer thought of doing that to the players (when the n64 had NO game developers).

  22. goldeneyeforevercom on December 24, 2019 at 10:08 pm

No offense, but how many times did you use the N64 controller? FPS Mode? You’re kidding right? No sure what planet you’re from but you have no idea. I would like you to do a video showing you playing GoldenEye or PD with your "FPS Mode". It will be worth a good LOL. Everyone who used an N64 knows the far left grip was usable about 1% of the time. So my question is, how many shooter games did you ever play on this console?

  23. mockier on December 24, 2019 at 10:09 pm

It’s a great controller, sadly let down by that thumb stick. I went through one controller when I played Ocarina of time when it came out. All the flat out running ruined the thumbstick.
I’ll need to check out those steel replacements

I really like the n64 controller

  26. Ziggyzaggy 300 on December 24, 2019 at 10:15 pm

    Love the virtual boy part

  27. Clement Poon on December 24, 2019 at 10:16 pm

the n64 controller looks like one of these sega controllers

  28. hoonaignachowaneha on December 24, 2019 at 10:16 pm

My wife’s son loves the N64 controller!

  29. DrewTube on December 24, 2019 at 10:16 pm

This controller is one of the best nintendo controllers. I totally agree, Drew

  30. Estivo on December 24, 2019 at 10:18 pm

the nunchuck is the middle part of the n64 controller with an extra button

  31. Jacques Malan on December 24, 2019 at 10:18 pm

Hmm yes the n64 controller’s stick is easily worn down, must have inspired the Joycon.

  32. SilentMott on December 24, 2019 at 10:20 pm

"One of the best designs Nintendo has ever produced". **Uses third party controller that looks and functions better in every way** Seems like a lot of post hoc rationalization for what we see today as if the N64 thought of so many things first. If it was ahead of its time, why aren’t we seeing similar design choices today? Aside from rumble, there’s nothing that has carried forward from this and what it even does well was done by the SNES before it. There’s a reason Nintendo has used the Xbox/PS formula with the pro controller as an alternative to its "unique" designs, it functions better in every capacity. The straightest line in controller evolution as I see it goes Atari -> NES -> SNES -> Ps1 Dualshock -> Today’s controllers (which are all essentially just variations on the original dualshock with 4 buttons on the right, d-pad, two analog sticks, start and select, and shoulder buttons).

  33. Sickentist on December 24, 2019 at 10:22 pm

I’m surprised you don’t mention how the Wii Nunchuck is essentially just the middle handle of a 64 controller separated out. The size, shape & feel is nearly identical. Personally I’ve always felt a big reason Mario Galaxy was so good was because of the stealth return to the same controller feel we had forMario 64.

N64 gamepad is one of the comfiest controllers one can hold. Fact.

  36. THICC AREOPLANES on December 24, 2019 at 10:24 pm

    The 64 controller is amazing

  37. Pantherarist on December 24, 2019 at 10:25 pm

I fear no man, but that thing ( virtual boy controller) it scares me!!!

    Snes is the worst

  39. DanPlaysYT Roblox on December 24, 2019 at 10:26 pm

Nintendo collectors should get the wired switch pro controller

  40. Ragecat568 on December 24, 2019 at 10:27 pm

This is my 2nd favorite controller, 1st being the switch pro controller, the only problem with the n64 controller I have is the arrows on the dpad and the analog stick.

  41. Star masterc on December 24, 2019 at 10:29 pm

The n64 controller was fixed in 2001.
The trident shape is truly pointless.

  42. La Tanière de Renardeau on December 24, 2019 at 10:31 pm

    No it’s not

  43. Zach Berg on December 24, 2019 at 10:32 pm

Drew I was introduced to the n64 at A VERY VERY young age so it was probably the first controller I’ve ever seen and so I love it

  44. Ricardo Hernández on December 24, 2019 at 10:34 pm

Well you are extremely biased, it’s understandable, N64 was your childhood.

  45. NeThZOR on December 24, 2019 at 10:35 pm

Good video, but you completely skipped over the shoulder buttons and how they function for the N64 controller.

  46. Fede Thrasher on December 24, 2019 at 10:35 pm

I love my n64 cos i discover the s video cable…. and the video quality now is outstanding.. its amazing.

  47. Shayna Pulley on December 24, 2019 at 10:37 pm

I, too, have a soft spot for the N64 controller. I’ve been trying to find one designed for the Nintendo Switch just for the nostalgia.

  48. Jan Ekehage on December 24, 2019 at 10:38 pm

I use a hori pad mini for N64 gameplay personaly but i still think the original controller is good.

  49. BHarris25 on December 24, 2019 at 10:39 pm

I lived through that controller and I have to disagree, it was terrible. 3D was new and they just didn’t know how to move around in it yet. Rumble pack was cool for about 5 minutes until you had to save something. I ended up just leaving the memory pack in.

  50. jacob mynenko on December 24, 2019 at 10:39 pm

Not the worst, but it still sucks balls, and so do the Joy Cons. One thing Nintendo can never get right is controllers
